I had many unforgettable experiences during my Erasmus+ stay in Puy en Velay, France. It lasted for 10 weeks from 4 February to 13 April 2024. It was an opportunity for me to experience something new, learn about French culture, make new friends and most importantly improve my language skills. Throughout my stay I attended a French high school where I experienced first-hand what it is like there and how different their school system is compared to ours.
In the first two weeks I was getting used to the new environment, where I tried to integrate into the team as quickly as possible. I discovered how much different communication in French with native speakers is from what we hear in the classroom. I overcame my fear of making mistakes, because without mistakes, I would not have been able to communicate or improve in French.
We had a two-week vacation the following two weeks, during which I learned about life in a local family. I had to overcome many differences, misunderstandings and loneliness. I had the opportunity to visit local landmarks and learn more about the history of the city.
In the remaining six weeks, I began to feel the regularity of the routine. I adapted to the lessons and even started to join in. In my classes at school, I understood how a different type of education can affect one's world view. I also noticed a drastic improvement in both my speaking and comprehension. I attended several film and music performances with my friends. I also sampled some of the recommended local specialties.
Erasmus+ allowed me to experience a foreign culture and a different way of life. I have made friends for life and gained valuable experience that I will be able to share with others and inspire them to try new things. My stay taught me independence, motivated me to continue my French studies and brought me closer to my dream future.
We asked...
01
What experiences and highlights from your stay are worth mentioning?
The best experience I have is from a trip I took over the holidays with a family friend. We went to the town of Clermont-Ferrand, where we climbed the Puy de Dôme volcano. In the evening we went to the cinema with their friends, with whom we subsequently stayed overnight. The next day we went ice skating, even though neither of us knew how to do it. Then we climbed another volcano. We slept one more night and on the last day we went to see the cathedral. We took the BlaBlaCar service back, which scared me a little, but it was worth it in the end.

What were your first impressions upon arrival to your family and school?
My family picked me up at the airport, where I couldn't talk and was quite scared. They asked me a lot of questions and showed me where I was going to live. The whole house looked very cold and dingy. The school was not much better. At first glance it was too big and complicatedly built, so I couldn't find my way around. I was introduced to many people on the first day and was confused when I showed up for all my classes. The whole day took too long and I couldn't believe anyone was used to this routine.
03
How would you describe your typical day?
I usually got up for school at 6:20 and the bus to school was at 7:00. With one transfer, I got to school just before school started at 8:00. Classes were 55 minutes long and breaks were 5 or 10 minutes. At 12:00 sharp, lunch break started and the whole school went to the school cafeteria for lunch. At 13:00, afternoon classes started and lasted until 18:00. I didn't get the bus back until 7:00. A little while after returning we had dinner together, after which I went to my room.
